The importance of visiting your hygienist
What is a dental hygienist?
A dental Hygienist is a dental professional who specialises oral health care and the treatment and prevention of gum disease by professional cleaning of plaque that builds up on the enamel of the tooth.
Plaque is a soft sticky substance containing millions of bacteria that builds up on the teeth causing tooth decay and gum disease if not regularly treated by a combination of brushing and flossing. However, plaque that is not removed by daily brushing will eventually progress to a hard substance – tartar. Tartar then collects at the gum line causing the gums to become red and inflamed and may also cause bleeding upon brushing.
The benefits of regularly hygiene visits to your dentist include;
- Prevention of gum disease
- Prevention of bad breath
- Prevention of oral cancer
- To help you achieve that brighter whiter smile.
