Roba Khundkar is a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon. She specialises in all aspects of cancer, trauma and general plastic surgery. She has a sub-specialist focus in cancer care, in particular skin cancer and rare soft tissue tumour (sarcoma) reconstruction. She is a fully board certified Plastic Surgeon and is on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery.
She undertook her pre-clinical medical studies at the University of Cambridge and graduated with honours in Developmental Biology and Neurosciences. After completing her clinical medical studies at the University of Oxford, she moved to Bristol for Core Surgical Training and gained Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2006. She was awarded a competitive National Training Number and undertook specialist training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in centres of excellence in Birmingham, Salisbury and Oxford.
After becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2014, Miss Khundkar undertook additional sub-specialist soft tissue oncology fellowship training in the Oxford Sarcoma Unit. She was awarded the prestigious British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) Bruce Bailey Fellowship prize for which she travelled to the internationally recognised Ganga Hospital in India where she gained additional advanced skills in Limb Reconstruction and Hand Surgery under the tutelage of the esteemed Professor Raja Sabapathy. She then travelled to Japan for a fellowship with world renowned Professor Isao Koushima to learn the most up to date and advanced techniques in Microsurgery and Super-Microsurgery before taking up NHS Consultant posts at Wexham Park Hospital (Slough) and Southmead Hospital (Bristol). Additionally, she holds the European Diploma in Hand Surgery awarded by the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand.
Actively engaged in clinical research, Miss Khundkar presents and publishes work at both national and international levels, has been an invited speaker at international conferences and is lead author of the book “Consent in Surgery”. She is currently an Associate Oxford University Medical Education Fellow and has received teaching excellence awards from the University of Oxford. She undertakes training of surgeons both in the UK and abroad. She is an Honorary Lecturer in Surgery at Muhimbili University, Tanzania and supports the National Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Training programme.
As a core faculty member of the Oxford University Global Surgery Group, Miss Khundkar is involved in the group’s research, educational and advocacy work to improve access to safe surgical care worldwide. She leads the undergraduate programme for Oxford Medical Students in Global Surgery and is a mentor and research supervisor to both students and trainee surgeons nationally and internationally.
